MARTINSVILLE,VA, (March30, 2009) – Two flat tires plagued Zachry driver David Starr on the short track at Martinsville Speedway in the rained out Kroger 250 which ran on Monday.  The team and driver never gave up and continued to work on the Zachry Toyota Tundra’s tight condition, something that is typical of the paper-clip shaped short track.  Despite the two flat tires and extreme tight conditions, at the end of the race Starr applauded his team for all their hard work and determination while telling them it was finally a great setup.  The team went on to finish the race in the 24th spot.
The No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra Race Recap

  • Starr qualified in the 22nd position with a lap time of 20.437 seconds at a speed of 92.655 mph.
  • Under caution on lap 13, Starr radioed into his Crew Chief Jason Miller that his truck was tight after it rotates in the center.  “I try to get it to roll through the center and get back in the throttle and it gets tight,” Starr said.
  • Under the third caution on lap 48 the team took advantage of the time to get fresh tires and fuel.  Miller had the team make an air pressure and wedge adjustment during the stop.
  • Then under the fifth caution the leaders cycled through their first pit stops which moved Starr into the 11th position for the restart on lap 99.
  • He held this position during the sixth caution on lap 113 and took advantage of the time to communicate with Miller again.  “It won’t rotate at all,” Starr said.  “It almost stops when I try to roll it through the center.  The wedge adjustment didn’t help.”
  • Then on lap 120 the race restarted and the field jammed up in front of Starr.  He bumped into a truck in front of him and it caused his right front tire to go flat.  The team was forced to pit under green-flag conditions on lap 123 to change right side tires.
  • The seventh caution came out on lap 127 and the team had a chance to breathe.  Miller called Starr back in to make adjustments to loosen up his Zachry Tundra. The team was three laps down.
  • On lap 152 under the eighth caution the team changed left side tires and removed spring rubbers to help loosen up Starr.  The race resumed on lap 158.
  • Then under the ninth caution on lap 161 Starr received the lucky dog award to get one of his laps back.  He was listed in the 25th position.
  • Before the 10th caution Starr got bumped by competitor Ricky Carmichael and had another right front tire go flat.  The team pitted, fixed the tire, made more track bar and wedge adjustments and sent Starr on his way.  He was now four laps down.
  • The Zachry Racing Team pitted once again on lap 208 to give Starr fresh right side tires.  Then under the 12th caution Starr told his team, “I appreciate you all not giving up out there.  This truck is turning a whole lot better now.”  Miller echoed his driver, “We are a team and never give up on a race together.”
  • Starr went on to finish the event in the 24th spot.

Kevin Harvick won the Kroger 250. Ron Hornaday Jr., Mike Skinner, Johnny Benson and Rick Crawford followed in the top five.
