David Starr
No. 24 Autismspeaks.org Toyota Tundra
AAA Insurance 200
Dover International Speedway

DOVER, DE, (May30, 2009) – David Starr almost had his first win of the year at Dover International Speedway when a flat right front tire in the final laps of the AAA Insurance 200 race forced the team to pit.  The HT Motorsports Team ran in the top ten most of the race, and the Texas native driver exclaimed numerous times, “I love my truck!”  That was music to the team’s ears as they watched their driver turn the fastest laps on the race track.  Unfortunately as Starr was running in the third spot and gaining on the leaders, he and the two competitors in front of him ran over something with only 16 laps left which caused all three to have flat tires.  Starr went on to finish the race in the third position, his highest finish this season.

The No. 24 Autismspeaks.org Toyota Tundra Race Recap

  • Starr qualified his Toyota Tundra in the 14th position by posting a lap time of 23.689 seconds.
  •  In the opening laps of the race Starr radioed in to his Crew Chief Jason Miller that his No. 24 Autismspeaks.org Toyota Tundra was neutral.
  • By the third caution on lap 16 Starr said, as he was running in the ninth spot, “The truck feels good, but I’m out here working on my entry into the corners.
  • Under the fourth caution on lap 34 Miller called Starr into the pits for fresh tires.  He restarted on lap 39 in the 16th spot.
  • Then on lap 45 under the competition yellow, the team pitted for fuel.  Unfortunately there was a mix-up in the pits causing the gas man to get fuel sprayed in his eyes and thus leaving the catch can in the back of the truck when David took off.  Miller had him back up so the team could remove the can and Starr was penalized to the tail en d of the longest line in 23rd.
  • 20 laps later he had worked his way back into the top 10.  The team used the time under the sixth caution to give Starr fresh tires, fuel and make a track bar adjustment.  He restarted on lap 85 in the 14th spot.
  • Under the seventh caution on lap 100 Starr pitted for fuel and no adjustments.  He said, “I’ve got a great truck.” The race resumed on lap 106 and Starr got shuffled back to eighth in the restart but only 10 laps later he had worked his way back into the third spot.
  • By the eighth caution on lap 132 Starr was running second and loved the way his Toyota Tundra felt.  The team pitted for fuel and Starr restarted on lap 139 in the fifth spot.
  • In the ensuing laps Starr picked up another two positions to run third.  Then on lap 184 the first and second place positions and Starr all ran over the same thing.  The first two were sent up the track and Starr was able to hold his Tundra in the lead but had a flat right front tire.
  • He was forced to pit on lap 187 for right side tires only.  The team assessed the tire upon removing it to confirm the hole in the Goodyear Wrangler.
  • The race restarted on lap 190 and Starr picked up two positions to finish the event in the third spot, his highest finishing position all year.

Brian Scott won his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race in Dover.  Dennis Setzer, Starr, Jason White and Johnny Sauter followed in the top five.
