News and Notes:

  • Terry Cook will make his 307th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start in the Lucas Oil 200 at the 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway.
  • Cook will continue to add to the longest consecutive starts record in the history of the series, with his 289th straight start dating back to the 1998 season opener at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando.
  • Cook will test two trucks on Friday before choosing one to practice, qualify, and race with on Saturday. The trucks the team is taking to Iowa are “Slim”, which the team used at Texas on June, and the yet-unnamed Chassis 12, which was races at Memphis, Indianapolis, and Bristol.

You have performed very well in inaugural events over the years, like fourth at Daytona (2000) and third at Mansfield (2004). Do you put any extra emphasis on the first event or is it just a coincidence? “I look at it this way: Iowa is the most important race on the schedule right now because it is the next event on the schedule. As a driver that’s how you have to be. But that said, we are truly excited to be going up to Iowa for a few different reasons. It’s a clean sheet of paper to everyone in the Truck Series. No one has raced a truck there or even tested a truck there with the combination of tires and the gear NASCAR is mandating. Everyone will start fresh, and I think with the experience that myself and my crew chief (Danny Rollins) have that we’ll have a little advantage over some of the other teams. I know that they are expecting a huge crowd up there and we always get excited to race in front of a lot of really hungry race fans. “

Have you ever tested at Iowa? “Every time I’ve ever had an opportunity to get up to Iowa and test there has been something that has popped up and stopped us from going. The only thing I know about the track is what I’ve seen on TV. The place looks like Richmond, but at the same time it doesn’t look like it races like Richmond. You have a lot of typical short track characteristics but you also have superspeedway speeds. I know there is a big bump down in turns one and two so we’ll spend a lot of time working on our suspension package for that. I know the groove widens out as the race goes on too, so there will be a lot of side-by-side racing there.”

How hard is it to come in and get up to speed at a track that you’ve never been to? “It shouldn’t be too hard. Danny (Rollins) has a lot of experience and knowledge. We will get to test two trucks on Friday and we’ll be able to have data acquisition on one of them. Give me three or four laps to find the line that allows me to carry the most momentum around the track and then we’ll spend the first hour figuring out which of our two trucks is the one we want to race. Then we’ll spend the rest of our practice time refining the suspension package. We have a teammate there too (David Starr) and we’ll be able to talk to him and see what he’s running. The way that NASCAR has it set up for us on Friday with all of the track time and the chance to run two trucks and data acquisition makes it as close to a test day as you can get. Add that to having a teammate there and we have a great chance to try multiple setups and see what works and what doesn’t.”

What have you heard about the race fans in Iowa? “The fans out there are great. They have been deprived of this kind of racing for so long and they really come out to support this racetrack. It doesn’t matter what racing series is there – the IRL, ARCA, or the Nationwide Series – they come out and show their support. They had 56,000 people for the Nationwide race and they even get 20,000-plus for their ARCA races out there. I’m really excited to get out there and put on a good show for them.”

Terry Cook Short Track Stats: Terry has 92 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts on tracks less than one mile in length. He has also led a total of 514 laps in short track races. His average short track start is 14.5 and his average short track finish is 17.0.
