News and Notes:

  • David Starr is a former winner at Gateway International Raceway, scoring the win in 2004. In nine starts at GIR, Starr has one win, two top-five, and four top-ten finishes. His average start is 15.9 and his average finish is 14.9. Starr has only led one lap at GIR, but it was the lap that counted – the final lap – during his 2004 victory.
  • The Copart 200 at Gateway International Raceway will be Starr’s 233rd career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start. Overall, he has four wins, 44 top-five finishes, 93 top-ten finishes, and five poles. He’s led 581 laps throughout his career, which dates back to the Phoenix race in April 1998.
  • After running to the finish of every race so far in 2009, a streak of 16 consecutive races, Starr was out early in last Saturday’s Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway as a result of a crash. Starr was hit by another competitor entering turn one on lap 109 and made contact with the outside wall. He was uninjured in the accident.

What do you remember about your 2004 win at Gateway? “I remember that we only led the last lap. There were so many wrecks that we had to have four tries to get the race finished with a “green-white-checkered”. A couple of times the leader got wrecked and that let us just keep moving up closer to the lead. On the last restart we got a little better run into turn one than Chad Chaffin and we got together and he went up the track a little and we went on to win. We’ve won some that way and we’ve lost some that way. The fans were going crazy. That’s what the Camping World Truck Series is all about.”

What’s the toughest part about racing at Gateway? “It’s not the same at one end to the other, so you have to compromise with your setup. The straightaways are so long and you’re on the gas for a long time, then you have to get hard on the brakes to get the truck slowed down and turn. Turn one has a lot of banking and turn three is pretty flat. You have to work on which end of the track you want to be better in and then try to do the best you can at the other end. Brakes are very important at Gateway too, probably as important here as any other track we run. You’re going so fast down the straights and you really have to get it slowed down to get through the corners.”

Do you miss the multiple attempts at a “green-white-checkered” finish? “I think every driver out there wants to do what we can to give our fans a good show. We want to go under that checkered flag at full power, not coasting along under caution. A win is a win, we’ll take it however they come, but we all want to race for it too.”
