New Hampshire Motor Speedway – Heluva Good! 200
- Terry Cook will make his 309th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start in the Heluva Good! 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Overall, he has six wins, 44 top-five finishes and 92 top-ten finishes.
- Cook will extend his streak of consecutive series starts dating back to the 1998 season opener at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando. The NHMS race will be Cook’s 291st straight appearance in the NCWTS.
- Cook has scored one win at NHMS (2002), one top-fives, and two top-tens. He led 40 laps en route to his victory in 2002. His average start is 14.1 and average finish is 16.4.
- The Heluva Good! 200 will be broadcast live on SPEED on Saturday September 19 at 3 P.M. Eastern.
You aren’t an extremely superstitious driver, but you have to be wanting to do something to change your luck lately. Are you doing anything different? “No I’m not really superstitious, but we’ve sure had our fair share of bad luck lately. I think that’s really all it is. The guys on the team are working just as hard as they were when we were racking up top-five and top-ten finishes. One part of you says you should just keep doing things the way you have been because you know it works and that bad luck can only last so long. But the other side of you is wanting to do anything you can to get that monkey off your back. I’m not going to say we’re going to drastically change our approach to the race this weekend, but I wouldn’t go looking for any bananas in the transporter – we don’t want to encourage that monkey on our back to stick around any longer than he has.”
You’re a former winner at NHMS. What’s the key to getting back to victory lane? “You need a truck that drives strong off the corner and has good horsepower down the straightaway and then a good brake package to get you slowed down and turned into the corner. Handling is important too because the turns are flat. They’ve made it a two-groove track now so you can pass and as a driver I love that because all you really ever ask for is an option to go to the high side or the low side. It’s not really easy to pass there, but it’s easier than it was. Track position is still important so you don’t want to do anything that will cost you positions on the track. You might look at some pit strategy to help you once you’re in your pit window but with the new pit rules we use this season that’s a given just about every week.”
What do you remember about your win at NHMS in 2002? “It was another flat track win for us, and we were so strong on the flat mile tracks that year. We traded a little paint that day too so it wasn’t just a walk in the park. There were some other drivers that were up there leading laps and they had some misfortune and we were there to pick up the ball and run with it. We had to hold off Dennis Setzer and just like he is now he was really strong on the flat tracks too. One of the other things I remember is that we ran into Carlos Contreras and his wife Alejandra the night before and Carlos told me he thought I was going to win the race. My wife Amy has just reconnected with them on Facebook so maybe we need Carlos to send us a little good luck just like he did in 2002.”
This Week’s Truck: Terry will pilot “Slim” this weekend at NHMS. It’s the chassis he used to race to an eleventh-place finish in its most recent track appearance at Iowa Speedway.
