Talladega Superspeedway
TALLADEGA, Ala., (Oct.31, 2009) – David Starr didn’t get spooked racing on Halloween at Talladega Superspeedway, matter of fact he stayed calm, cool and collected saving his Tundra for the right moment to pounce. Starr raced as high as second place for numerous laps and managed to miss the multi-truck melee in Talladega. He raced his teammate Terry Cook to the finish line and managed to cross it in the fifth position, his fourth top-five finish this year. The top-five finish helped close the gap behind Johnny Sauter in the NCWTS points battle, where Starr is now only a mere 34 points behind him for the eighth spot.
The No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra Race Recap
- Starr qualified his Zachry Toyota Tundra in the 14th position with a lap time of 54.074 seconds at a speed of 177.091 mph.
- Starr had moved into the fifth position by the time the second caution came out. He maintained that spot and radioed in to Crew Chief Jason Miller saying, “I’m saving it. It’s all good.”
- Under the third caution on lap 40 the team added Sunoco fuel first and then changed four Goodyear tires. After assessing the tire wear and seeing how good it was, Miller said, “We are done taking tires for the rest of this race. Fuel only next stop!”
- Unfortunately during this pit stop the team had a rear tire get loose on pit road, so Starr was forced to start in the rear of the field.
- Starr quickly showed that was no problem. In six laps he was already back in the top 10. And by the fourth caution on lap 66, he was settled in the fifth spot.
- The team pitted under the caution for gas only just as Miller had previously mentioned. Starr restarted in the second spot on lap 70.
- He held that position for two more cautions. Then on lap 90 the seventh and final caution came out for a huge Talladega melee. Starr was listed in the third spot and readied himself for the green-white-checkered flag finish.
- As the field came to the finish line, Starr was racing side-by-side with teammate Terry Cook. When the duo crossed the line Starr was listed in the fifth spot. This marks his fourth top-five finish this year.
Kyle Busch won the Mountain Dew 250 fueled by Fred’s. Aric Almirola, Todd Bodine, HT Motorsports Teammate Terry Cook and Starr round out the top five. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will race again next Friday night at Texas Motor Speedway.
